ABOUT WESTSAYEED!

West Side Comedy Club, is owned by Eugene Ashe and Thomas Wilson, the duo who brought you Playa Betty’s and Réunion Surf Bar.

It is the brainchild of Eugene and his wife Nina who met while working together at Caroline’s Comedy Club in the early 90’s. It was an awesome time for comedy and they were there to witness some of today’s biggest names right at the beginning of their careers. (Louie C.K.; Dave Attell; Wanda Sykes; Dave Chappelle; and Jim Gaffigan), to name drop a few!

The Club is managed and booked by Gina Savage, a comedy veteran who worked at Broadway Comedy Club, Caroline’s and Comix and as a booker and manager with Barry Katz. Nina Ashe worked at Gotham Comedy Club for over 10 years and after retiring from the club, continued to use her experience from there to handle large parties and private events for Réunion Surf Bar.

Combining their years of comedy club, bar, and restaurant experience with their sheer love of stand-up and a reverence for comedians, Eugene and Nina are opening West Side Comedy Club. Their goal is to bring the fun, exciting, and sexy vibe they felt when they first started working in comedy clubs, to the cool, intimate space of West Side Comedy Club. They want to create a place where customers will love to laugh and comics will always want to perform and hang out.

Al Martin’s name is synonymous with comedy in New York City, and is responsible for launching the careers of many top comedians working today. Martin’s first venture in the comedy club business was in 1988 when he established the New York Comedy Club out of a need to help and showcase talented comedians. An accomplished comedian himself, Al was a National Headliner with numerous television credits such as The Joan Rivers Show, Geraldo and Evening At The Improv. Al was always more than just a comedian; he was an activist for the comedy community serving as Vice President of the Professional Comedians Association, and was instrumental in the organization dedicated to bringing health insurance and improving working conditions for comics. Although performing was a love for Martin he found his niche as a comedy club owner. He soon found himself helping his fellow comedians that he had once worked beside. Sarah Silverman, Lisa Lampanelli, Brett Butler, Tracy Morgan and Wanda Sykes are just a few comedians who have graced his stages over the years. New York Comedy Club became the first comedy club with two showrooms in 1997. Al was one of the first club owners to embrace diversity in the comedy world by establishing the first Latino Comedy Night at New York Comedy Club. He’s also facilitated and welcomed to his stage shows featuring gay, urban and Asian communities. In 2000 Martin opened New York Comedy Club in Boca Raton, which he ran successfully until late 2006. With the success of two clubs Al decided to expand his brand and in 2002 opened the Broadway Comedy Club, located in the heart of Times Square, the only bi- level entertainment complex with three showrooms in NYC, serving over 600 comedy lovers from around the world nightly. In 2005 he partnered with Barry Katz, executive producer of NBC’s Last Comic Standing to run Boston Comedy Club, giving Martin the bragging rights to being the first person to run three comedy clubs in New York City. In the Summer of 2012 Martin expanded his comedy ventures into Greenwich Village, in New York City with the opening of Greenwich Village Comedy Club, from day one the club has been filled every night with a lively downtown crowd and top comedians making them laugh! Martin’s clubs attract comedy fans from around the world including some of the biggest celebrities from Jay-Z & Beyonce, Andre Aggasi, Jimmy Fallon, Montel Williams, and Harry Connick Jr. On stage or behind the scenes, Al Martin will go down in history as the King of New York Comedy. Martin is a brilliant thinker and innovator of his time, and has made New York City the World’s Capital of Comedy.

Eastville is the only bonafide comedy club in the borough of Brooklyn!
NO DRINK MINIMUM AT THIS TIME!!!!

EastVille is also the only comedy club with NO drink minimums! As a limited offering, we’ve SUSPENDED the 2 drink minimum in the name of phenomenal comedy in Brooklyn! We still offer specialty crafted cocktails to quench your thirst if you so desire. Along with yummy homemade popcorn and candy.

Eastville is a 120 seat comedy club located right by the Barclays Center, and downtown Brooklyn’s nightlife district! The club was founded by native New Yorkers with decades of experience in the comedy and bar business. Therefore, we pride ourselves in featuring the most experienced, popular, and hilarious comedians while also providing an authentic Brooklyn setting for our patrons. We’ve been the site of numerous TV and film shoots, and are often the outlet for celebrity comedians who drop by for impromptu performances. We also offer private parties and events for kids featuring child-friendly comedians, magicians and other performers.

Eastville was established in Manhattan in 2008, and after 10 wonderful years, it was time to upgrade our space. Brooklyn’s explosion in popularity, culture, and nightlife made it the perfect location.

So exactly why Brooklyn? Many of the most influential comedians to ever take the stage, such as: Jackie Gleason, Chris Rock, Mel Brooks, Joan Rivers, as well as all Three Stooges all hail from Brooklyn. With deep routes in comedy and culture, Brooklyn has already become the bedrock of entertainment in New York City.

Who are these amazing comics?

Janeane Garofalo has had many memorable and critically acclaimed roles in film and television since bursting on the scene in 1992. She’s appeared in films such as “The Truth About Cats and Dogs,” “Wet Hot American Summer,” “Ratatouille” and “Reality Bites.” She was a cast member of the Emmy award winning “Ben Stiller Show,” as well as the comedy classic “The Larry Sanders Show,” and had recurring roles on “24” and “The West Wing.” She appeared in Bravo’s first scripted series “Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce” and can be seen in the Netflix series “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.” Along with “Little Boxes,” Janeane will appear in several feature films in 2016, including “Blue Angel” and “Speech and Debate.”

In addition to acting in film and television, Janeane is an outspoken activist and tours the country as a stand-up comedian. She was instrumental in the successful launching of the first liberal radio network, Air America Radio, where she hosted her own talk show, “The Majority Report.” A lightning rod for controversy, Janeane’s well-informed opinions and unflinching honesty have inspired laughs as well as striking a chord with the left, right and everyone in between. She is a noted peace activist.

Notable Roles: Janeane played the role of Paula, the acerbic talent booker, on “The Larry Sanders Show,” for which she received an Emmy nomination in 1997 and two Cable Ace nominations. During the fall of ’94 she joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live.” Other television work includes  the series finale of “Mad About You” and the critically-lauded final season of NBC’s “The West Wing,” where she played Democratic campaign strategist Louise Thornton. We offer weekly classes Winter, Spring and Fall, plus Summer Camps. We also have teachers at schools, camps and community centers on weekends and after school. Each session starts with Improvisation, playing games that are a ton of fun while teaching valuable life skills. These are the same games we play with corporate groups to develop better leaders, team building, sales, service etc. For our public sessions we include Stand-Up Comedy, taking stories of experience and observation, then crafting original comedy routines. Each session ends with a performance showcase of original and improvised comedy skits completely created by the students. Write. Get on stage. Reflect. Repeat. #Comedy 101 How to be Stand-up Comic

Write. Get on stage. Reflect. Repeat.

By Walt Frasier @waltfrasier on most social media platform

Driving home from Cape Cod the other day, I got a call.

I’m an impressionist. Which clubs in New York like celebrity impersonators?

Easy answer. If you are funny, all of them.

Of course, the response was, I’m hilarious.

My next question, where have you performed.

A couple bars upstate, one or two in town.

Ah ha! He had not even wandered into an open mic at a real club.

There is now get rich quick schemes in comedy.

He started talking about what Jimmy Fallon did in open mics.

I said, well that was 30 years ago. (sorry, Jimmy, I aged you a tiny bit lol). Go to an open mic.

The problem with a lot of young wannabes? They only see the finished product. They see the 30-60 minute specials on cable or live at a big theater. Or they see the 15-20 minute showcase set.

They don’t see the comic hustling for stage time, going to many clubs in one night. Back up, they don’t see the comic bombing 100 times at open mics, bringers and barkers.

If you want to be a stand-up comic, you have to do the time.

The next thing I say, I know guys that started 10-15 years ago and are now bitter about being passed over.

I know a small few that were working with in a year of hitting the scene.

What was their secret?

They hustled. This is a job. They wrote material. They were in the clubs EVERY night.

Pete Davidson was in the clubs at 16. So was Eddie Murphy. That’s why both of those guys were on SNL at 19.

Fallon was working the clubs by 21. He was 24 when SNL gave him a shot.

How does one get from wannabe to working comic?

Stage time. Writing time. Want to be a guest on Fallon, find an open mic and go talk for 5 minutes tonight!

Listen to any comic of any worth and they will share the horror stories of bombing. For every minute of great comedy the stars have hundreds of minutes that ended up in the garbage.

Here is a simple formula I teach.

Buy a cheap paper journal.

Brainstorm a list of ideas.

Get on stage (film yourself)

Simple talk, using your list as a guide. Put your notebook on the stool.

Get off stage and immediately write in your journal. How did that go? Be honest, brutally so, but without ego and/or ire.

Then watch the video. Did your initial take line up with what you see?

What worked?

What sucked?

The formula is simple.

Write. Get on stage. Reflect. Repeat.

Judd Apatow, in his master class, says THIS IS A JOB. A comic is a writer. A writer needs to sit down and write a few hours a day, many days a week.

This is not science. This is trial and error. You have to get on stage to hear the words out loud. Stand up comedy is a conversation between you and the audience. What is rattling around in your head may or may not be as funny as you think. And quite often what you find mediocre in your head, kills!

Getting On Stage

On any given night, there may be 200 rooms in New York alone where you can get on stage and play for 5 minutes. You may need to pay $5. You may need to buy a drink. Some are free.

http://badslava.com/new-york-open-mics.php

Here I just did your first job. We have these wonderful tools now called smart phones. Google OPEN MICS.

Write. Get on stage. Reflect. Repeat.

Get on stage as often as possible. If you don’t have a club paying you to perform, or a manager begging to represent you, you have not been in stage enough yet.

Tired of paying to play?

Do a bringer show?

Get stage time by conning friends into seeing you.

Running out of friends and family to con, do a barker. Hand out flyers on the corner.

Tired of making money for other wannabes, produce your own show.

Here is where things start to change.once you have enough contacts to produce a show, something fun happens. You can trade spots.

Hey Marsha, I’ve got a show Thursday at 7 at the Broadway. Want a spot.

Sure, how about doing my show next week.

Once you have stage time to give away, you start to get free spots on mics.

Guest Spots

As you traverse this seemingly bottomless pit of paying to play, with money, times and soul trading in for five minutes of hell on stage bombing etc, a couple things happen.

1) You start to figure out who you really are as a comic.

2) You start to get mediocre, maybe even good.

3) You start to network with comics, club Booker’s etc.

Some one will tap you on the shoulder and say, hey kid, want five minutes on our Tuesday main stage show?

You better say yes!

Everything starts to change the day you go from begging for stage time, to being offered stage time.

If you say no, who knows how long it will be before they ask again.

Then go immediately to 10 open mics so you are ready to kill.

This is an audition. It is not an immediate gate way to paid gigs, but it is the beginning of another long path.

You may be on that path for a month, year or a decade. That all depends on you.

Write. Get on stage. Reflect. Repeat.

The best case scenario, you get on stage tonight, in one year you may be working at the clubs. I know one guy that did that. I know far more comics that quit the business, or hang around bitter 10-20 years later. Most of the comics you see working (getting paid on a all pro show) at clubs or on Last Comic Standing have been hustling for 10+ years.

Work Hard. Be patient. Don’t be a jerk. This business is tiny. Burn a bridge and get black listed all over town. Be someone folks want to work with on and off stage. Be someone folks can stand driving across country with.

Check ego at the door, with your insecurity and simply.

There are no guarantees. But I do guarantee every minute you are not on stage, every minute you are not writing, every  minute you are not networking, some one else is.

Write. Get on stage. Reflect. Repeat.
